Why is the tension meter needle on
my SteadyWeb 12P unwind controller moving?
The SteadyWeb controller tension meter is very sensitive to fast variations
in web tension caused by machine operation. Bent
shafts, worn bearings, and normal machine functions affect tension and can be seen on the meter. These
variations are often too fast to correct. However the needle dithering
on the meter in response to the fast tension fluctuation can be eliminated
by increasing the meter damping. Applying meter damping will not
change the accuracy of the tension reading but will eliminate the very
fast needle movement caused by machine vibration.
Slower variations may be caused by improper controller tuning.
Switch the unit to "manual" control mode. If the tension variations are the same
or smaller, the controller should be retuned.
A very good starting point for tuning the SteadyWeb 12P is Response
20%, Gain 5% and the Stability settings (both fine and coarse) at 50%.
Always make very slight adjustments in the potentiometers and wait a moment
or two to allow the change to take effect. Keep in mind that high settings
for Gain and Response can cause tension variation.
