How do I tell if taper tension is needed on my rewind?

As a rule of thumb, any roll build in excess of about 20" will require taper. If you are
experiencing crushed cores, telescoping or stared rolls, or deformed material at the center of rolls, taper is also required. In most cases paper rewinds will require taper.
